Made right here in the USA by the Girad Model Works Company this Fire Chief Siren Car is another early example of toy designers combining proven wind-up toy technology with battery-operated lights added on to stand out from their competitors (It worked).
This windup mechanism includes a "siren" mechanism that sounds suprisingly true to life for the sirens of the time. The headlights and tail-light operates via the ON/OFF lever located just inside the front window. Just behind the steerable front wheels sits the 2 D-cell batteries cleverly tucked into the available space.
There are not many battery operated cars from the 1930s or 1940s as they were more of a novelty toy. As such there are not many examples of battery-operated toys from this era which makes the ones that did survive highly collectible if they are in good shape, or if the aged patina (aka nicks, dents and scratches) looks "right". In this example we believe this beat up (but fully working) siren car looks awesome.
Special Note: The wind up key is not intended to be removed from this toy. A smart move as a seperate key is easy to lose and hard to replace back in the olden days.
Hidden Easter Egg: In the movie, did you notice the morse-code? Can you figure out its message?
