Calls were never truly private if there was a switchboard operator involved. Now a switchboard operator of the day did have to monitor multiple calls at the same time and was trained to "not listen", but they did need to

1. Record who made the call, 

2. Who the call was made to, and 

3. How many minutes the call was.
